In the soviet time there were this kind of milk platforms by the roads all over the Estonia. Farmers brought their milk to these milk platforms and then the milk truck collected it from there. Men had to pour the milk from the vessels into the truck’s tank by themselves, therefore the platforms for reaching up there. Today there are only very few of those milk platforms left and they are, like this one on the photo, only for aesthetic purposes as monuments.

This photo is taken with the redscale film and it should be red but as you can see, it isn’t. The frame is totally over exposed and I have no idea what went wrong – maybe it was something wrong with the film or was there a camera malfunction or some other anomaly, I don’t know. All I know, is that despite of the strong over exposure, the result is still interesting.

Elva is a small town in Southern Estonia and lake Arbi is a small lake in the middle of the town. This big empty building on the photo was built over twenty years ago in the soviet time and was meant to be a cultural center, but then the Soviet Union collapsed, system ran out of the money and this building is way too big for such a small town, so it stays empty…

This photo is shot on film and no digital effects are applied. The technique to achieve such result is called redscale. It’s actually quite simple – you just have to load a color film backwards in the camera. You can’t do it by accident, because there is only one way you can load the film canister into the camera and that secures that you always load the film correctly. So if you want to make a redscale film, you have to respool the film so, that you switch the emulsion and non emulsion sides of the film (and of course you have to do this in complete darkness). Actually there is much simpler way to get a redscale film – just buy it from the Amazon.

There is a tradition in Estonia to make bonfires on 23th of June. Every year, even when it rains, there are thousands and thousands of bonfires in that evening and night. On that photo there is also one. It’s not the best example of a fire that is as big as a house but who cares. When the bonfire is smaller, it’s easier to jump over it, that is also a part of the tradition.
